Museum law overhauled
An overhaul of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) recently went into effect, aiming to hasten the return of Native American remains and artifacts held by museums and other institutions. The American Museum of Natural History in New York closed two exhibition halls this weekend in an effort to comply. Native American activists cheered the overhaul, characterizing it as a game-changer for repatriation efforts.
Endangered rhinos on the brink
The northern white rhinoceros is the world’s most endangered animal, as just two females remain. But scientists may have found a way forward after the recent successful in-vitro fertilization of a related subspecies. The next phase is to impregnate a southern white rhinoceros with a northern white’s frozen embryo, which was made using eggs from one of the remaining females—neither of which can carry a baby to term—and preserved northern white rhino sperm.
A Martian chopper
NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has been retired. The tiny craft became the first machine to fly through the skies of another planet when it ascended to a height of 10 feet (3 meters) over the surface of Mars on April 19, 2021. Ingenuity went on to fly another 71 missions, far surpassing expectations, until recently suffering rotor blade damage

On this day in 1919, the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, prohibiting the sale of alcohol in America. The country’s flirtation with imposed sobriety, a period known as Prohibition, would last until 1933 when, making good on a campaign promise, newly elected Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt legalized alcohol by signing the Twenty-First Amendment, which rescinded the Eighteenth.
